Gary Speed was found dead

What a shocker still in disbelief hear Gary Speed, who played at Elland Road between 1988 and 1996, was found dead on Sunday morning. The news has shocked the football world and tributes have poured in for the Welshman. His death at the age of 42 was announced on Sunday morning and tributes have poured in for the former midfielder.

In a statement released by the FAW, both chief executive Jonathan Ford and president Phil Pritchard paid tribute to Speed.

Ford said: "I, and all of the football family of Wales, am devastated by the news of Gary's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family at this difficult time."

Bobby Gould, who worked with Speed during his reign as Wales coach between 1995-1999, paid tribute to a talented and dedicated footballer.

Leeds United have expressed their 'deepest sadness' at the announcement that former Elland Road favourite Gary Speed has passed away at the age of 42.

"We are stunned to learn this news. The club expresses its deepest sadness," said a Leeds spokesman.

Former Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson described the death of Speed as a "tragic loss" and felt the former Wales midfielder was a "star in the true sense".

He said: "The players I worked with represented all colours of the rainbow in terms of character but in Gary's case he was a star in the true sense. For him - at 42 - to leave us is such a tragic loss.

Doncaster manager Dean Saunders, a former international team-mate of Speed, remarked on his dedication to his craft as a player.

"He was so fit - he was one of those players who would stay behind all day in training. I can't believe what's happened," he said.

Gary was a true legend and a great ambassador for football he will be missed by all football fans up and down the United Kingdom.
